Moon Sweepers save backups and recovery

The official Windows backup location, automatic backup schedule and a careful order for investigating a world that will not load.

Quick answer

Version 1.0.4 adds up to five backups per slot outside Steam Cloud. Copy those files before experimenting with a damaged world.

The confirmed backup folder

The official 1.0.4 notes give this Windows backup location: C:\Users\[user-name]\AppData\LocalLow\DragDropGames\MoonSweepers\Backups. Replace [user-name] with your Windows account name. It is the backup folder, not a claim that active saves use that same subfolder.

Each save slot retains up to five backups, beginning one minute into a session and then every 30 minutes. Those backups are outside Steam Cloud. A scheduled backup is a recent recovery point, not a promise to preserve every action since the last one.

Try the current game before editing files

The earlier 1.0.3 patch fixed large worlds that appeared corrupted even though their files were intact. Start by allowing the current update to finish and trying the world normally. Do not delete a save merely because it takes longer than expected to open.

Version 1.0.4 checks and repairs damaged saves on loading or after a crash. Read any recovery message and check the world state when it opens. A recovered copy can be older than the moment you crashed.

  1. Close the game and let Steam finish any current sync.
  2. Copy the backup folder to a separate dated location.
  3. Confirm the game has updated, then try loading once.
  4. Record any repair message and what progress is present.
  5. If it still fails, keep the original files and report the symptom.

Avoid a version rollback

The developer explicitly warns that saves written in 1.0.4 cannot open in older game versions. Downgrading can therefore create another loading problem. Preserve the original files before changing branches or trying community recovery advice.

This guide does not document the internal save format or a manual file-replacement procedure. If automatic repair fails, a preserved original and a clear report are a better starting point than renaming unknown files.

Common questions

Are backups stored in Steam Cloud?

The new automatic backup folder is explicitly outside Steam Cloud.

Can an older game open my 1.0.4 save?

No. The official patch notes warn against that downgrade.
